Featured Jersey 2016: Jooj Duquemin
Published: 20 May 2016
If you attended the last Skipton Open Studios in 2014 you may well remember local photographer Jooj DuQuemin's van, which the clever Artist turned into a Camera Obscura so that the public coul enjoy the magical optics that it could conjure up! We asked Jooj about what we can expect from her Open Studios this year, and what optical tricks she's got up her sleeve in 2016....
"How would you describe yourself as an Artist?
I would describe my medium as Photography/Photograms/ Illusions/ 3D work/ Anamorphic art. I love to combine science with art, hence pH Art. (Though my Mother said, in a horrified voice, “ You can’t call a company Phart!”
Have you taken part in Skipton Open Studios before?
How did you first get into Art?
As a child…..Doesn’t everyone! Then at 12 I really started getting into photography, turning (with the help of my Dad) the family utility room into a darkroom. I studied photography at Plymouth, with a keen interest in wildlife and underwater photography, it was only later, when studying the degree course at Highlands, I realised that the theme that linked all my work together was that of VISUAL ILLUSION.
Who is your creative inspiration?
None in particular, I prefer to be inspired by various objects, underwater landscapes, rock formations, architecture and experiences. For example my interest in Anamorphic art was first ignited in the Science Museum in London and then further expanded at The Camera Obscura and World of Illusions in Edinburgh…….
Why should we visit your Studio? I’ll have my ‘Camper Obscura’ at Daisy Cottage, St Ouen, so you’ll effectively be able to get inside a camera! Plus I’ll have a variety of work on show. AND you get the added bonus of 3 other (amazing) artists; Lizi Hill, Rebecca Friedman and Mark Guest.
What have you been doing so far in preparation for this year’s Open Studios?
Preparing the new ‘mini’ camper obscura........Painting the interior white at present.
What can we expect from you from this year’s Open Studios?
Describe Jersey’s creative scene in 5 words…
Surprisingly vibrant, talented and varied."
We really can't wait to try out the new vehicle! Jooj will be taking her Camper-Obscura to Daisy Cottage Campsite for you to enjoy, whilst also checking out the work of Lizi Hill, Rebecca Friedman and Mark Guest, during the West weekend of Open Studios, Saturday 25th + Sunday 26th June, 10:00AM - 5:00PM. Check out her Artist profile to find out her contact details and links to her website.
