Featured Artist 2016: Natalie Mayer
Published: 31 May 2016
The lovely Photographer Natalie Mayer chatted to us whilst Holly took photos of her working during a blissfully sunny evening at her beautiful and unusual studio, the historic La Tour Carrée tower in St Ouens, which is situated right on the sea-front overlooking the surf and sanddunes.....
"How would you describe yourself as an Artist?
I never describe myself as an artist! I usually just say I’m a photographer and I like working with people.
Have you taken part in Skipton Open Studios before?
Yes, I exhibited some cheeky natural nudes last year.
How did you first get into Art?
I’ve always been into photography… it’s a natural way to document life for me. Just like writing a diary without words.
Who is your creative inspiration?
Anyone lively, expressive and uninhibited.
Why should we visit your Studio?
It’s a beautiful and unusual space on St Ouen’s Bay, into which I have poured lots of love. There will be a roaring fire, interesting work on the walls, a place to get comfy and perhaps enjoy something lovely from the mini-bar.
What have you been doing so far in preparation for this year’s Open Studios?
Meeting lots of new people. Hanging out with characters I’m interested in, but who weren’t previously part of my social circle. Making new friends with unusual people basically!
What can we expect from you from this year’s Open Studios?
A warm welcome, a good chat, and, hopefully, some interesting portraits.
What inspires you to make art? Wanting to create a document of the way I see things to be.
Tell me about your work process? Do you have a routine or will you work through the night if inspiration takes hold?
I’m a secret worker. I have lots of projects on the go and hardly ever show them to anyone as I never consider them finished. Open Studios is a great way to persuade me to actually show something other than my commercial work!
Do you like to focus on one piece at a time or do you have lots on the go at once?
Loads of unfinished projects ticking over in my mind, driving me to a distraction!
What are you artist plans for the next 12 months?
Finish some of the unfinished works! Exhibit them in my St Ouen Studio, and allow other artists to exhibit too."
Natalie's studio and work both look equally lovely, and we can't wait to visit her again for her Open Studio during the West weekend: 25th + 26th June, 10:00AM - 5:00PM, to see her work and perhaps go and eat an icecream on the beach afterwards! Check out Natalie's artist profile for her contact details, a link to her website and a map of where to find La Tour Carrée.
