Locally celebrated painter Ian Rolls is the first Artist to take over our blog as part of the 2016 Skipton Open Studios.
Ian sent us this photo of some of the work that he has been developing as part of his upcoming exhibition and in preparation for the Open Studios.
Ian said; “this is a random display in my studio of some of the paintings I will be showing in my exhibition "drift", as part of Skipton Open Studios 2016. The exhibition is at the White House in St Ouen's Bay from the 24th until the 29th June. All the paintings are on driftwood panels and most are drawn on site directly onto the panel.
For this series I do not look at my drawing whilst I am making it, but I look intensely at the subject. So the lines have their own agenda, but they have a very special quality, which I respect at the painting stage by not covering them. I paint the areas between the lines, first with white gesso and then with carefully chosen colour, in either oil or acrylic paint.
Some paintings are framed in driftwood and others are just the irregular shape of the panel, as I found it washed up on the beach or rocks.
I’ve been working with Jarek at HugglerPrint on the design of a booklet to accompany my exhibition “drift” at the end of June as part of Skipton Open Studios. It’s looking good! Thanks to Jarek & Huggler."
We can't wait to see the rest of the pieces that Ian develops for his take over of the National Trust building Le Don Hilton (The White House) in St Ouens. Please visit Ian's artist profile to find out the details of his studio, which will be open as part of the West Open Studio weekend, 10:00AM-5:00PM, Saturday 25th + Sunday 26th June.
