"As a textile artist and painter, I am constantly inspired by the coast and the countryside of Jersey. Although nearly all my work is a reflection of the natural environment of the island, some pieces are based on other ideas or places that I visit. I create both large and small scale works which range from representational to abstract.
I aim to produce images which are more than simply a visual representation. I love the tactile and visual qualities of the materials that I use. They provide a source of inspiration in themselves, so once I get started on a piece it progresses partly from the ideas that I have visualised in my head and partly from things that happen as part of the process. I like the spontaneity of working in this way as there is never a totally predictable outcome. I sometimes work with textiles alone but at other times I combine them with other media. I like using acrylic and sometimes do simply paint with it but I have developed ways of combining it with textiles in my pictures and hangings. Painting has influenced the way in which I approach textiles and conversely the way that I paint has been affected by my use of textiles. For me, the tactile qualities of textiles can often say more than paint alone.
Art has always been an important part of my life and in the last 15 years I have exhibited regularly in Jersey, winning a number of awards for my textiles. I have also exhibited several times in the U.K. and have had work included in exhibitions in Sweden, South Africa and U.S.A. My textiles have been featured in various publications and my commissioned pieces include a number of large scale corporate works."
